Rabbi Lewis Levene was Rabbi of the Jubilee Street Great Zionist Synagogue in the East End of London. He published this book of sermons and eulogies in approximately 1929. My copy has his address of 52 Heneage Street, Brick Lane crossed out and handwritten as 83 the Avenue, London N.W.6.
The Jubilee Street Synagogue opened in 1912 and closed in 1967. The list scanned below has the names of officers and members of the synagogue in about 1929.
The book has four interesting approbations (haskamas):
- Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, Chief Rabbi of Palestine
- Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer of Jerusalem
- Rabbi Arieh Levene, of Jerusalem, known as the tzaddik who visited prisoners
- Rabbi Moshe Avigdor Chaikin of London.
These are followed by a note about Rabbi Levene’s family.
It also has a very interesting prenumeranten list of subscribers, including members of the Jubilee Street Synagogue and others, starting with the President of the Synagogue, Yona Koren, and the Vice-President Simon Harris:
