Der Mishpat – Judgement, a play by Morris Katz, London 1949

DerMishpat01

Morris Katz (Pinkhes Moyshe Kats) was born in Lodz in 1901, left Poland in 1925 and lived in Czechoslovakia and then Antwerp, Belgium, before fleeing to London in 1940. He emigrated to the United States in 1950.

He was a dentist and Yiddish writer who contributed to various Yiddish newspapers, including the daily Yiddish newspaper ‘Di Tsayt’ in London. He also contributed to Avrom Stencl’s journal, Loshen und Lebn. He wrote a book on dentistry and the Talmud, in Yiddish, called “Dentistik” in 1943 in London, which (as yet) I have not found.

This book was printed by the Narodiczky Press in Whitechapel, london.  The pages below are sample scans.  If you would like your own copy of Der Mishpat, it is available from the Yiddish Book Center.  Click here.

My copy is nicely inscribed by the author.

The book starts with a list of other publications by Morris Katz, beginning with Dentistic (mentioned above). It includes the play, ‘The Nazi’s Jewish Daughter’ (click on it) which I have written about previously.

DerMishpat04

This is in memory of Morris Katz’s brothers, Peschi and Yechiel Meir, and their wives and children and all their relatives who perished in concentration camps in the years 1942-45.

The book starts with a foreword by the author:
