Record and Prospect. World Jewish Congress British Section Report to the National Conference, London, 1951.

1951WJC01The World Jewish Congress, not to be confused with the World Zionist Congress, describes itself as the leading international organization connecting and protecting Jewish communities globally, in more than 100 countries.

It was created on the eve of the Holocaust in 1936, just three years after the Nazi rise to power, out of the need to organize in the face of the dangerous antisemitism sweeping across Europe. Not only did no international Jewish organization exist in 1936, but the World Jewish Congress’s founders faced tremendous opposition from other Jewish leaders and groups who did not want an organization advocating politically for Jewish rights.

The British Section of the World Jewish Congress was once quite active and did some valuable work, but its representatives could not really claim to be representative of the British Jewish community as they were not democratically chosen.  In 1974, the Board of Deputies of British Jews affiliated with the World Jewish Congress. The British Section of the World Jewish Congress, which had previously represented UK Jewry, was dissolved.  The Board of Deputies, which started in 1760, even if it did not meet regularly in those times, can, at least somewhat claim to be an elected body representing the UK Jewish community.

However, back in 1951, the British Section of the World Jewish Congress was alive and active and here are some selections from my copy of its report.
