Madrich LeMachzor, Companion to the Machzor, Rabbi A. L. Rubinstein, Glasgow, 1957.

Rabbi Abraham (Yehuda Leib) Rubinstein is another one of Britain's somewhat forgotten rabbis.  He was born in 1919 in Glasgow, to immigrants Jacob and Fanny Rubinstein. His father died at the young age of 34, two years later.  At the age of nine he was a soloist in the choir of the South Portland Street … Continue reading Madrich LeMachzor, Companion to the Machzor, Rabbi A. Maarchei Adom by Rabbi Abraham Dov Moshe Monusson, Seini, Romania, 1929.

When this book was published, Rabbi Monusson was Rav (Rabbi) of Grimsby, a port in Lincolnshire, England.  I have previously written about his son-in-law, Rabbi Julius Gould of Leeds and his book, Geulas Yisroel. Rabbi Monusson's story is somewhat tragic.  He was born in Vilna, about 1868.  He was educated at Yeshivos (Rabbinical schools) in … Continue reading Maarchei Adom by Rabbi Abraham Dov Moshe Monusson, Seini, Romania, 1929.

Sefer Divrei Moshe, by Rabbi Dov Moshe Namyot, (of Plungian, Antwerp and Gateshead),Vilna, 1906.

This book was written by Rabbi Dov Moshe Namyot, who was Rabbi in Gateshead, England,  before the days of Gateshead Yeshiva, and has become rather forgotten.  He was Rabbi of the Blechener synagogue in Gateshead from 1915 until he died suddenly in 1919.  The tiny, but very independent and strongly orthodox Gateshead community had appointed … Continue reading Sefer Divrei Moshe, by Rabbi Dov Moshe Namyot, (of Plungian, Antwerp and Gateshead),Vilna, 1906.

Chidushe Ri”ch, by Rabbi Yehoshua Chaim Halevy Epstein, Vilna, 1890. Copy of Rabbi Namyot of Gateshead.

Rabbi Dov Moshe Namyot is another of Britain's forgotten Rabbis - he owned this book, and this is his story. Rabbi Namyot was Rav of the Blechener Shul (Synagogue) in Gateshead, long before the famous Gateshead Yeshiva was started.  The Synagogue was built in 1912 and known as Blechener from the Yiddish word for tin, … Continue reading Chidushe Ri”ch, by Rabbi Yehoshua Chaim Halevy Epstein, Vilna, 1890. Kol Torah – Kollel Rabbonim BeBritania – edited by Rabbi Chaim Shmuel Lopian, Gateshead, 1947.

This publication was printed (in London, by the Narod Press) in 1947. The Gateshead Kollel had been founded at a meeting at the home of the Rov of the Gateshead Yeshiva (Talmudical College), Rabbi Shakovitsky, five years earlier.  The Yeshiva was itself relatively new.  The Shochet (religious slaughterer) of Gateshead, Rabbi Dovid Dryan, had written … Continue reading Kol Torah – Kollel Rabbonim BeBritania – edited by Rabbi Chaim Shmuel Lopian, Gateshead, 1947.
