Yeshurun, Vol III, No. 10 &11, edited and published by Rabbi Shlomo Alter Heilprin, London, 1959

Yeshurun was an orthodox Jewish magazine, published in London by Rabbi Solomon Alter Halpern from 1957. This is the summer  1959 issue.   (Fishburn Books has recorded volumes I and II for sale – but here is volume III).

Rabbi Shlomo Alter Yitzchok Halevi Halpern (sometimes Rabbi Alter Shlomo) was a prominent Rabbi, Rosh Yeshiva (Head of a Talmudic College), and author in the London community.  He was a graduate of London’s Yeshivas Toras Emes and the Gateshead Kollel.

Rabbi Halpern was born in Duisburg, Germany. When he was about fifteen years old, he went to learn with Rabbi Moshe Schneider in Frankfort.

He became the youngest son-in-law of Rabbi Moshe Schneider, founder and head of Yeshivas Toras Emes, and he took over the yeshiva and later the kollel (school of advanced studies) which replaced it. He taught Advanced Talmud at Toras Emes, and was co-editor of the first volume of Michtav meEliyahu, the mussar lectures of Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler.

This edition of the magazine contains an interesting article by Rabbi Emile Meir Marmorstein, entitled “N.16. and All That”. Rabbi Marmorstein was the son of Rabbi Dr. Arthur Avraham Marmorstein, who was born in Miscolcz, Hungary, in 1882. Arthur Marmorstein had emigrated to London and taught at Jews College for many years until his death in 1946.His son, Emile, was a noted author.

  1. Thank you for another interesting article, and for the reproduction and circulation of an interesting article written by my father zl in Yeshurun. I would just like to point out that my father was not a rabbi and would not have wished to be known by a title that he did not possess. In fact my father wrote many articles in Yeshurun, some of them under pseudonyms (including ‘Meir Abraham’), especially when he had two articles in the same issue! Please let me know if you are interested in additional numbers of the Yeshurun magazine, or other items of Anglo Judaica etc, perhaps when you are next in London. Best wishes Yissochor Marmorstein
