The Society for Relieving the Aged Needy of the Jewish Faith, London 1891.

AgedNeedy01This charity was founded in London, England in 1829.  The object was to provide pensions for indigent members of the Jewish faith who were over 60 years old.

The Report includes a list of the pensioners (on page 17), as well as the legacies.

What makes this is a remarkable and useful (if somewhat rare) document is the list, reproduced below in full, from page 24, of the donors and subscribers, with their names and addresses and amounts donated, in alphabetical order. Here is a listing of hundreds of London Jewish households, representing, by and large, the established members of the community before the great influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe.

  1. I noticed G Cohen and Sons at 600 Commercial Road as donors – do you remember the G Cohen 600 group – scrap metal merchants I think
