Machzeh Avraham by Rabbi Abraham Schachter (father of Rabbi Jacob Schachter of Manchester and Belfast), Rumania, 1923.

Schachter01Rabbi Abraham Schachter, the son of Yehuda Leib, was born in Dorban in Serbia in 1853.  He was Rabbi of Frumusika, where his son, Rabbi Jacob Schachter, later to become Chief Rabbi of Belfast, Northern Island, was brought up, and Batashan (Botosani) in Rumania.

In 1920 Rabbi Jacob Schachter moved to Manchester where he was Rabbi of the New Rumanian Synagogue until 1926 and a member of the Manchester Beth Din (the rabbinical court).  The New Rumanian Synagogue is also known as the Vine Street Synagogue and the North Salford Synagogue.  His parents apparently stayed in Frumusika, Rumania, where his mother, Rabbi Abraham’s wife, Rachel, died at the age of 86 in 1941.

In 1923 Rabbi Jacob Schachter published this 415 page volume of his father, Rabbi Abraham Schachter’s writings, printed in Cluj-Klausenburg, Rumania. This was called “Machzeh Avraham” (the vision of Abraham), and included some of Rabbi Jacob’s own work, entitled “Likutei Yaakov” (the gleanings of Jacob).  This book is available for download on Hebrewbooks.org.

Schachter04My copy appears to be Rabbi Jacob Schachter’s own copy. In 1926 Rabbi Jacob Schachter moved to Belfast, Northern Ireland, succeeding Rabbi Isaac Halevy Herzog as Rabbi of Belfast.  I have previously written about Rabbi Jacob Schachter’s book, “Ingathering”.

The book has haskamos (approbations) from Rabbi Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook, from Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein of Slabodka and from Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Pieterkov:

Schachter02

Rabbi Abraham Schachter was said to have had a profound acquaintance with the intricacies of the Halachah (Jewish law), with a gift for piercing through the maze and following a line leading to a clear issue. The book takes the form of a duologue between the Rabbi and his disciple.  Machzeh Avraham gives Rabbi Jacob Schachter’s address as 134, Great Clowes Street, Broughton, Manchester.  The book was financed with a legacy from Aaron Dov ben Chaim Berkovitch of Manchester.

  1. Our Shul, the aforementioned North Salford (Vine Street) recently received an email from a German lady who had found this Sefer in Tel Aviv in 1999 and wanted to send it to us.
We haven’t yet received the Sefer but she did send us a letter which was in the Sefer, from Rabbi Shachter to Nathan Laski dated 1926, in which he sends him a copy of the book. Nathan Laski was the lay leader of Manchester Jewry at the time. He was a supporter of Winston Churchill and helped his election as an MP in 1906. He also befriended Chaim Weitzman who first met Churchill in Laski’s home.
She also sent us a 4 page pamphlet of press cuttings that Rabbi Shachter sent to Nathan Laski. It includes a review by Moses Gaster, the Haham of Sefardi British Jewry, who coincidentally officially opened the New Rumanian Synagogue (our Shul’s former name) in 1919 and whose daughter married Nathan Laski’s son- Neville Laski.
