A Special Service on the occasion of the Coronation of their Majesties King George & Queen Elizabeth, in the Synagogues of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews, London, 9th of May, 1937.

1937Coronation01The Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was actually held on 12th May, 1937, with a massive display of pageantry.  However, this booklet was issued for services held three days before, on Sunday 9th of May, in the synagogues of the Spanish and Portuguese (Sephardi) Jews, Bevis Marks and Lauderdale Road.

Following Mincha (The afternoon service), the traditional prayer for the Royal Family, was said, followed by a prayer for “when the crown of the realm is set upon the head of our beloved sovereign King George”, with mentions of Queen Elizabeth and of the Queen Mother.  The prayer concluded “guard and preserve this blessed realm and this great Empire”.

This was followed by appropriate psalms, and at the end, the national anthem, God Save the King, in both English and Hebrew (Keil Shmor HaMelech).
