700 Years of Jewish Life in Poland, by Eli Rubin, London 1944.

700Years01This wartime book was published by the Hebrew Department of the famous London bookshop, Foyles, in Charing Cross Road.  My copy is stamped “Consulate General of the Republic of Poland, Tel Aviv”.  I know almost nothing about the author, Eli Rubin.

The selection that follows shows that the author compiled a brief history of the Jews in Poland from a number of publications and included modern wartime material. There are also several pages and some interesting photographs about the various organizations that were set up to help Polish Jewish refugees in Britain.

The extracts should be read in the context of wartime, with a Polish Government in exile in Britain and incomplete knowledge of the Nazi German destruction of the Jewish community in Poland.

“For the last four years an impenetrable curtain covers all what happened in Poland. Nobody knows what situation we will have to face, when the war will be over, but, on the whole, it probably will concern the same sphere of Jewish problems, emerging again in the same forms as in this essay.”
