This Annual Report captures the essence of the Central Synagogue in 1910. Here is the synagogue of the Establishment – wealthier members of the Jewish community, who live in Central and the West End of London and beyond. It was originally established in 1855 as a local branch of the Great Synagogue in Duke’s Place in the City of London, but quickly became a congregation in its own right. In 1910 they were celebrating their 40th anniversary on this site in Great Portland Street. The community did not know that their magnificent building would be destroyed by a bomb on 10th May, 1941.
The report is filled with names of Officers, details of communal activities, weddings, and donors.
Services on Saturday mornings commenced at a civilized time of 9.40am, and times of Nishmas (10.10am) and Ein Kemocha (10.35am) are given if you choose to come a little later.
I have previously written about the Annual Reports for 1908 and 1909.
