Anglo-Judaica with Americana from the libraries of the late Chief Rabbi Dr. J. H. Hertz, C. H., E. N. Adler, offered for sale by A. Rosenthal, Oxford, 1948.

Rosenthal01This is a catalogue of an outstanding collection of Anglo-Judaica, offered for sale in 1948, so that the prices, by today’s standards are amazing – if only we had bought these items then.

Albi Rosenthal was the grandson of Jacques Rosenthal, a book dealer in Munich, Germany.  In September 1933 he moved to England at the age of 18.  His father was an art historian, Dr. Erwin Rosenthal.

Albi Rosenthal started his firm, A. Rosenthal, Ltd., in 1936 and in 1939 issued his first catalogue of books on consignment from his father.  He moved to Oxford after his premises in London were damaged during the blitz.

Rosenthal02This catalogue, his 11th, was issued in 1948 and contains significant and important items of Anglo-Judaica, some of which are scanned below.  Many are from the collection of the late Chief Rabbi, Dr. Hertz.
