AJA Review, London, Spring 1976 including Dayan Grunfeld writing on Inflation.

AJASpring1976Review1I’ve written before about the Anglo-Jewish Association, which still exists, but is, perhaps, a relic of a bygone age. It was formed in 1871 with the aim of strengthening Anglo-Jewish life and as a charitable support for Jewish education in schools in the Middle East and the former British Empire. It was always a strong fund-raiser for the Evelina de Rothschild School in Jerusalem.

It has had various publications, and the AJA Quarterly eventually became the AJA Review.  This attracted very distinguished writers.   This issue included Sir Isaiah Berlin, Lord Goodman, Rabbi Abraham Levy, who was Rabbi of the Lauderdale Road Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, Terrence Prittie and others.  There is an interesting article on Inflation by Dayan Dr. Isidore Grunfeld.

Dayan Dr. Isidore Grunfeld was born in Bavaria in 1900 and was a Dayan at the London Beth Din, as well as a Council member of the Anglo-Jewish Association. He was educated in German yeshivos (rabbinical schools) and acquired a law degree, attending Frankfurt and Heidelburg universities. he worked as a lawyer in Wurzburg until 1933, when, with the rise of Hitler, he was forced to leave. After a short stay in Palestine, he moved to London, where he mastered the English language and studied for semicha (his rabbinical diploma).  He was the author of many books on Judaism.  As a follower of Rabbi Hirsch, he believed in the formula of “Torah im Derech Eretz,” which he defined as steadfast loyalty to Torah and tradition combined with participation in the social, economic and cultural life of the country where the Jew has been welcomed as a citizen.  He died in 1975 in London.

His article on the destructive effect of inflation, which he links to the coming to power in Germany of the Nazis, is below, written by a lawyer and rabbi.

I’ve also included a book review by a young Paul Shaw (Paul Shaviv), then Education Officer at the Board of Deputies.

  1. 1. Hi Jeff, thanks for the mention! That was written almost 50 years ago. I feel old.
    2. At the time, I believe, the secretary of the AJA was the charming Gabi Cairncross, née Oppenheim, (d. 1995). Her husband, John Cairncross, was a British intelligence operative who was exposed as a Soviet spy, and believed to be the mysterious ‘Fifth Man’ of the Cambridge spy ring. I don’t know if they were together when Gabi worked in Woburn House.
    3. Dayan Ivan Binstock (who is probably a reader of this column) told me years ago that Dayan Grunfeld had sent a copy of his review to the book author, William Rees Mogg. This had elicited a reply where WMR had written that this was the only review which had understood his thesis, which was that inflation, which undermined social stability, was a moral threat, not just a financial issue.
