What was Dayan Hillman Reading? Shaylos and Tshuvos of the Rosh, Vilna, 1885.

This book was written by Rabbi Asher ben Yechiel, often referred to as Rabbenu Asher, or the Rosh.  He was probably born in Cologne in the 1250s, and died in Toledo, Spain, in 1327.  He was an eminent Rabbi and Talmudist, best known for his abstract of Talmudic law.  He had eight sons, including Jacob, … Continue reading What was Dayan Hillman Reading? The Golden Chain by Rabbi Simon Baumberg, London 1929.

This is an interesting book by a rather forgotten Chassidic Rabbi.  Rabbi Simon Baumberg was born in Lodz in Poland in 1872.  Dayan Lazarus wrote of him that his early Chassidic association left him a student of Jewish mysticism, the philosophical Kabbalah, while his grandfather imbued him with his own love for music. Rabbi Baumberg … Continue reading The Golden Chain by Rabbi Simon Baumberg, London 1929.

Ohr Hayashar on Bereishis by Rabbi Shmuel Yitzchok Hillman, London 1927 – Copy of Rev. Simcha Bunim Moher of Waterford, Ireland.

I've previously written about another copy of this book, written by Rabbi Hillman, who was born in Kovno, Lithuania, in 1868, and came to Great Britain in 1908, when he was appointed a Rabbi in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1914 he was appointed a Dayan of the London Beth Din, serving until 1934, when he settled … Continue reading Ohr Hayashar on Bereishis by Rabbi Shmuel Yitzchok Hillman, London 1927 – Copy of Rev. These are two important Rabbinical works by Rabbi Yonasan Eibeschutz (1690-1764), bound in one volume, and printed in Warsaw in 1878.  Rabbi Eibeschutz was an important talmudist, kabbalist and author who was the Dayan (rabbinical judge) of the city of Prague and later Rabbi of the Three Communities of Altona, Hamburg and Wansbeck.  Kereisi Upleisi … Continue reading What did Dayan Hillman Read? Eshel Avraham, by Rabbi Abraham Broda, First Edition, 1747, Frankfort on Main.

This is an interesting Antique Hebrew book with, as we shall see, a distant British connection to Dayan Samuel Jacob Hillman.  The book consists of Novellae (Chidushim) to the tractates Pesachim, Hullin and Bava Basra.  The first part, Chidushei Halachos, summarizes each topic on the basis if the Talmud and its commentaries, and the second, … Continue reading Eshel Avraham, by Rabbi Abraham Broda, First Edition, 1747, Frankfort on Main.

Sefer Ohr Hayashar by Rabbi Samuel Isaac Hillman of London on Tractate Bechoros, with a Kuntres (article) by his son-in-law, Rabbi Isaac Halevy Herzog of Dublin, Ireland, London 1921

This is a very large sized folio book with a remarkable collaboration between two heavyweights.  The first is Rabbi (later Dayan) Samuel Isaac Hillman of London.  This is one of his series of books called Ohr HaYashar, with his commentaries and novella on various tractates of the Talmud.  This one is on Bechoros.  The second … Continue reading Sefer Ohr Hayashar by Rabbi Samuel Isaac Hillman of London on Tractate Bechoros, with a Kuntres (article) by his son-in-law, Rabbi Isaac Halevy Herzog of Dublin, Ireland, London 1921
