This book is in my Anglo-Judaica collection for nostalgia. It was compiled by ‘Green Flag”. This was the pseudonym of F. H. Samuel, a long-time Jewish Chronicle journalist who worked for the Jewish Chronicle for over 50 years. He started as the office boy and ended as a respected journalist, edited the travel column for over 30 years and founded the Jewish Travel Guide. He was also the paper’s film critic.
The scans below are mainly of advertisements, but I have included restaurants in London, which show that there were East End food establishments still alive in 1964.
F H Samuel was my grandfather and I remember him compiling the Jewish Travel Guide in his study at his home in Westcliff. In particular I recall the smell of gripfix glue as he cut and paste items ready for the printers.
