Jewish Religious Education Board, Forty-Fourth Annual Report 1938.

1938JREB01This is the record of a substantial organization, dedicated to providing Jewish Religious education in London schools, mainly in the East End of London. However, by 1938, numbers were declining as the Jewish community was already relocating to better or more middle-class neighbourhoods. This was also at a time when the minimum school-leaving age had been raised to 15, although only a small percentage of the children continued their Jewish education beyond Barmitzvah age.

Financing, to pay for the Hebrew Classes of approximately 3,000 pupils in the East End of London and Hackney came from the wealthy (N.M.Rothschild, Colonel Stanley Cohen, Isaac Wolfson, Lord Bearstead, James de Rothschild etc.) from bequests and subscriptions. There were also collections at non-East End Synagogues, from Rev. I. Levy at Bayswater Synagogue, Dayan Gollop at Hampstead,  Philip Cohen at the Central Synagogue, Harris Swift at St. John’s Wood, Ephraim Levene at the New West End, Rev. Dr. J. Rabbinowitz at Dalston Synagogue, Rev. I Livingstone at Golders Green, Rabbi Dr. L. Rabinowitz at Cricklewood, H. I.  Alexander at Hendon, and others.

Here is detailed information including the names of the teachers and a report about each location:
