Tzion Rashi, by Dayan Moshe Avigdor Chaikin, London 1921

5q Rashi_0001I’ve previously written about Rabbi Chaikin’s other book printed in London, Klalei HaPoskim, which was printed in 1923.  This book was printed a little earlier, in 1921.  My copy is in it’s original paper wrapper, with almost uncut pages folded from sheets.  It is waiting to be taken to a bookbinder.  The paper is not of good quality and the book was apparently produced on a limited budget, compared to the later Klalei HaPoskim, which is a finer production.

The book consists of selected comments of Rashi on the Talmud Bavli, which are compared with parallel and supplementary comments elsewhere in his works.  Dayan Chaikin, who was born in Sklov and had been a Rabbi in Paris, emigrated to England in 1890 and was appointed Rabbi of Sheffield, and then Chief Minister of the Federation of Synagogues until he became a Dayan of the London Beth Din in 1911.

This post is dedicated to Rabbi Dovid Becker and the gentlemen of the Merrick, Long Island, New York, Monday Night Beis Medrash of the Long Island Torah Network, currently learning Masseches (Tractate) Beitzah.   I have scanned the preface and have chosen, as an extract, the section on Beitzah, below:
