The Redman’s Road Talmud Torah in Stepney, East London, was founded in 1901 and had just moved to its new address in Redman’s Road when this report was written. Redman’s Road runs parallel to Mile End Road, from Jubilee Street, almost to Stepney Green. The Headmaster, J. K. Goldbloom, was to remain for many years. The teaching method was simply to teach in Hebrew, with the children not allowed, if possible, to speak any other language.
The report was printed by Israel Narodiczky in Whitechapel, in English, Hebrew, and, interestingly, Yiddish, which would have been the first language of many of the parents. It quotes from the London Hebrew Newspaper “HaYehoodi”, a pioneering Hebrew newspaper edited by Isaac Suwalski until his death in 1913. You can read an issue of this newspaper here.
I have previously written about the Annual Report printed in 1911, and also the booklet issued to commemorate the first fifty years, in 1951.
Also, note the reference to the 1905 pogroms in Russia, which is in a black border in all three languages.
