London Board of Jewish Religious Education, Second Report, 1950-1951, 5710-5711, London 1951.

I previously wrote about the First Report of the London Board of Jewish Religious Education, which had come about following a Jewish Education Conference in London in November 1945.  In 1950 there had been progress in the training of teachers and a series of lectures intended for teachers given by Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie, Dayan Grunfeld, Rabbi Dr. Isidore Epstein and Dr. Joseph Heller.

The number of children on the roll, including Synagogue Hebrew classes, Talmud Torahs and Withdrawal Classes had grown: 9,752 in 1949, 10,397 in 1950 and 10,539 in 1951.

The report includes detailed statistics for each Synagogue and school.

For comparison, I have also previous written about the Eleventh Report of the London Board of Jewish Religious Education (1960).

  1. Many thanks for this one. It was interesting to see one of the people mentioned was ‘L. Domb’ — Louis Domb. His sister, Zlatte (aka Lottie) married one of my grandfather’s brothers. It was also interesting to see Edgware mentioned. My distant cousin Cecil Eprile, was the architect responsible for the synagogue built in Mowbray Road, in 1934. I attended the Rosh Pinah that was started there in 1951 or ’52, in 1955. This was because the newer, much larger synagogue, further along Watford Way, had been recently been established. Thanks again. Jeremy Frankel
