This little book of 48 pages was written by Rabbi Samuel Menachem ben Nachum Dov Brod of Hull, Yorkshire, England. Rabbi Brod was born in Russia (which included Poland) in 1856. His name may originally have been Brody. He arrived in Hull in approximately 1898 and stayed there until his death in 1938. Rabbi Brod was associated with the Old Hebrew Congregation in Osborne Street, Hull, and the Jewish Chronicle records that he gave a series of Friday night lectures on the Midrash in the winter of 1910. In the 1901 census he is living at 22, Lucy’s Place, Hull, with his wife, Sarah and three (of his four) children. In 1911 he was living at 70 Great Thornton Street, Hull. He had previously written another book, Yalkut Menachem, but I have been unable to find a copy.
Maarchei Shmuel consists of ten short articles on the Talmud and other subjects. The book was published in 1931 by the London bookseller, Cailingold and printed in Warsaw, Poland.
